If you earn abroad but still pay bills in Romania, you are handling more than a money transfer. Your salary, the family account and the property you might buy can each sit in a different currency and legal arrangement.
Start with the job the money needs to do. A Romanian account can be convenient without being the cheapest place to exchange currency. Holding that account does not establish eligibility for a Romanian mortgage.
Choose the account around the payment
| Your situation | Compare first | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Romanian household bills | RON payments, account charges and remote access | Accounts and debit cards |
| Sending euro earnings home | The final RON amount after fees and conversion | EUR to RON converter |
| Working in the UK | GBP/RON conversion and any intermediate currency | GBP to RON |
| Buying a home in Romania | Accepted income, deposit and borrowing costs | Romanian mortgage comparison |
Keep spending and borrowing separate.
A savings balance, a current account and a credit facility do not provide the same access or protection. Decide how much must remain available before comparing a promotional rate or a packaged account.
What to ask before opening a Romanian account abroad
Write down a normal month's transactions: incoming euros, outgoing lei, cash withdrawals and transfers to relatives.
Include months when you do not visit Romania. An account used for two holidays can still carry twelve monthly charges.
Ask how a fee waiver works.
A transfer from your own foreign account may not meet a bank's definition of an eligible salary payment.
Check the EUR account, extra card, ATM transactions and card delivery separately instead of treating the package name as a complete price.
Use your actual address and tax residence in the application. Romanian citizenship is not a substitute for the residence information the institution requests. Before starting, obtain the document list for your circumstances.
Remote opening is only part of the process. Find out what happens when your identity document expires, your phone number changes or you lose the device used to authorise payments. An account that works well today can be difficult to recover from another country.
Five banks and different jobs: checked on 6 November 2026
A diaspora bank account is a payment service; a diaspora mortgage is a borrowing decision. The table separates those jobs rather than ranking unlike products. Public conditions provide a starting point for a conversation, while an individual credit assessment still determines whether a lender will make an offer.
| Bank and purpose | Official-source finding | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Raiffeisen: diaspora account | 0 RON with qualifying monthly receipts of at least 1,000 RON or eligible balances of at least 5,000 RON; otherwise 20 RON/month. [1] | Current onboarding page names eight residence countries, Romanian ID and Romanian domicile. [9] |
| BT: app access and borrowing | BT Pay accepts a valid Romanian CRDS passport. Its overseas-income mortgage answer specifies permanent employment and at least one year's service. [2][11] | App enrolment does not establish mortgage eligibility. |
| Libra: diaspora mortgage | Product ceiling 2,000,000 RON; minimum monthly income equivalent to 10,000 RON. Deposit 20% for the FAQ's listed countries, 35% for Qatar/UAE. [3][7] | The lender assesses both the borrower and property. |
| Nexent: foreign income | The bank describes income documents and employment contracts requiring certified translation/legalisation. [12] | Confirm the deposit, loan currency and income country for the individual application. |
| CEC: a separate bank enquiry | Overseas-income conditions remain subject to direct confirmation. [CEC] | Obtain written confirmation of documents, security and eligible income country. |
Raiffeisen's current list comprises Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the UK and Spain. [9] A separate commercial survey covered nine countries; its sample is not the product's eligibility list.
Someone living elsewhere needs an answer about their circumstances before assuming that a diaspora label guarantees online account opening.
The fee document matters more than a welcome headline.
At 20 RON a month, twelve months without a fee waiver would cost 240 RON, before other services. That is arithmetic, not a quote for an individual customer. Where salary remains in an overseas account, the useful question is which receipts qualify, and when the balance or monthly activity is measured.
Raiffeisen also describes BNR-rate exchange of up to EUR 1,500 daily and EUR 10,000 monthly through its app, on working days between 10:00 and 11:00. [10] Those limits belong beside the benefit. A reader should not budget on the assumption that the reference rate is available around the clock.
BT Pay is relevant to account access, not a substitute for lending checks. For someone paying household bills from abroad, the everyday value may be a reliable way to manage money already held at the bank. Replacing a phone, renewing an identity document and changing contact details deserve attention before an urgent payment makes them unavoidable.
What Libra's figures mean for a home-purchase budget
Libra describes reimbursement of a return flight up to 2,000 RON when travelling to Romania to sign, subject to its conditions.
[13] That is not a general holiday allowance. Booking arrangements, evidence of the expense and the signing route need confirmation before travel, rather than an assumption that every journey will be refunded. The promotion runs to 31 December 2026 and can end when its budget is exhausted.
A product ceiling is not a personal borrowing entitlement.
Consider an illustrative EUR 100,000 property, without treating it as a current bank offer. A 20% deposit is EUR 20,000; a 35% deposit is EUR 35,000. The additional EUR 15,000 must come from the buyer. This comparison assumes the same price base and excludes valuation, legal expenses, insurance and conversion costs.
There is another moving part: the lender's accepted valuation can be below the agreed purchase price. An affordable monthly repayment does not solve a shortage of cash at completion.
Available savings, the purchase price and the approved loan therefore need separate lines in a budget rather than one reassuring headline number.
A payment routine that leaves a usable record
For a household sending money to parents each month, a repeatable transaction is more useful than a theoretical best rate. The salary arrives in its original currency; the Romanian household budget identifies what needs converting. Keeping the transfer confirmation and the receiving statement makes it possible to compare the amount sent with the money actually available for bills.
The route can matter as much as the stated fee.
Two services may introduce two conversions even when neither screen shows a large separate charge. Someone paid in pounds but paying Romanian bills needs a reason for routing money through euros. That reason should be the final RON amount and operational reliability, rather than the fact that the extra app is already installed.
A small trial transfer can establish that the beneficiary details and currency are correct before a larger payment is scheduled.
It does not guarantee identical pricing later. The confirmation screen for the actual transaction remains the place to check the rate, charges and expected delivery information for that particular amount.
Access is part of the cost comparison.
An account that saves a little on fees can become inconvenient if recovery depends on a phone number no longer in use. It helps to identify the recovery route while both the old phone and identity document still work. Another person's password is not a substitute for an authorised arrangement with the bank.
House-purchase savings also serve a different purpose from the money needed for next month's bills. Combining them can make a deposit appear available when it is already committed to daily living costs. A separate budget for the transaction exposes that overlap without requiring a prediction about the next exchange-rate movement.
A practical review can use the last three ordinary months rather than the cheapest single transaction. The questions are how often a fee was actually paid, how much RON arrived after conversion, and whether a payment required unexpected assistance. Those observations explain which account features the household uses and which are merely attractive on a product page.
EUR to RON: the useful number is the amount you receive
Compare quotes for the same amount at the same time. The headline transfer fee does not show the entire cost if the provider also earns money through its exchange rate.
Use this calculation: euros exchanged × effective rate − fees charged in lei.
Illustration only, using invented rates rather than current offers. For EUR 1,000, provider A quotes RON 5.00 per euro and charges RON 15.
You receive RON 4,985. Provider B quotes RON 4.96 with no separate fee: RON 4,960. A leaves you RON 25 more despite its visible charge.
Check again before confirming.
A different amount can cross a plan allowance or trigger another charge. Use our NBR exchange-rate reference as a benchmark, not as a rate that a commercial provider must offer. The euro–leu converter helps with the arithmetic; the provider's quote determines what arrives.
For a digital account, check the contract country as well as the plan. Revolut's Romanian Standard fees page displays a version due to take effect on 19 December 2026 and links to the earlier terms. Future terms should not be read as today's tariff. [5]
Do not confuse a euro transfer with free conversion
Ask which currency reaches the receiving account. A transfer to a relative's RON account may be handled differently from moving euros between two accounts you own.
EU rules equalising charges for certain cross-border euro payments do not make currency conversion free. Check conversion charges independently. [6]
Request the estimated amount at destination and check who performs the exchange. At a terminal or ATM, read any offer to convert lei into your account currency. Compare that option with your card issuer's terms before accepting it.
A familiar currency is not automatically a better deal.
Foreign income needs its own lending assessment
Moving money into a Romanian account does not turn it into a Romanian salary for underwriting purposes. The lender assesses the underlying income, not simply the pattern of incoming payments.
Employment country, earnings currency and contract type can change the answer. A self-employed applicant may need a different set of evidence from an employee. Our guide to Romanian borrowing with overseas income covers that decision in more detail.
Do not order every document translated and notarised before asking the bank.
Libra's FAQ says English documents do not need translation; this is a specific bank procedure, not a rule for all lenders. [7]
Set aside more than the deposit.
Ask about valuation, property paperwork, insurance and any travel or representation costs.
See the mortgage deposit guide, then test a scenario in the mortgage calculator. Neither replaces the bank's personalised offer.
Stress-test the payment in your salary currency
If you earn euros and repay lei, convert the instalment back into euros when planning your budget. A stronger leu can increase the euros required even when the RON instalment is unchanged.
Another hypothetical example: a RON 2,500 instalment costs EUR 500 at RON 5.00 per euro, but about EUR 520.83 at RON 4.80. These are illustrative rates, not an exchange forecast.
For variable interest, check the index, margin and reset date in the agreement. Our IRCC explanation describes the reference index; it cannot determine your contractual rate on its own.
Family access and deposit protection need separate checks
Money sent to a relative's account is controlled through that account.
If someone needs to act for you, arrange the bank's authorisation procedure instead of sharing your login or treating another person's card as your own.
Read the institution's legal name.
FGDB's list distinguishes participating Romanian banks from branches of foreign institutions.
A Romanian-facing app does not establish which guarantee scheme applies. [8] Compare term deposits separately from everyday banking or investments.
Before your next trip
- Get the current tariff for your residence and the date of that tariff.
- Compare the net amount received for a specific transfer.
- Check account recovery and replacement-card delivery abroad.
- For a mortgage, get written confirmation of the accepted income and documents.
- Keep the personalised offer and its expiry date.
The account that suits a summer visit may not suit recurring family payments or a house purchase. Make each comparison around the transaction you actually need.
