What to check with an amount in pounds sterling

GBP/RON follows the leu against the euro and the euro against sterling. Bank of England decisions and UK economic data can move the rate even on a day when EUR/RON barely changes.

For a transfer from the UK, compare the net amount that arrives in lei, not just the quoted rate. A fixed fee matters more on small sums, while the rate spread shows on larger ones. Sterling (GBP) is not the Turkish lira (TRY), so check the code on your statement too.

Will my bank use the NBR rate?

Not necessarily. The NBR rate is a reference published once a day. Banks and exchange offices apply their own buying or selling rate, and that spread plus any fee changes the final amount.

When does the NBR rate change?

The NBR publishes a new rate every banking day, usually around 13:00 Romanian time. At weekends and on public holidays the last published rate stays in force; its date is shown next to the value.
