What medical cover includes

Medical travel insurance covers consultations, hospital stays, medication, medical transport and repatriation within the selected limit. For Europe, 30,000 EUR is a common minimum. For the US, Canada or Japan, look at 75,000 EUR or more.

The European Health Insurance Card helps in the EU, but it does not replace travel insurance. It does not pay for repatriation and often excludes private clinics.

Luggage, cancellation and sports

Luggage cover is often between 350 and 1,800 EUR, with a per-item limit. For a laptop, camera or sports gear, ask for a separate clause.

Maria Popescu, ASF authorised broker RBK-018/2019: "For a ski trip in Austria, the gap between the cheap policy and the correct one was 38 lei. The client chose the version without winter sports and paid 1,260 EUR for slope rescue."

Typical price range

For 7 days in the EU, a basic medical policy for a young adult can start around 24-45 lei. With luggage, cancellation and recreational sports, it often moves to 87-165 lei.

Check the covered countries, medical ceiling, deductible, excluded sports, luggage limit and emergency phone number. If you travel by car, compare car insurance extensions too.
