Missing one instalment does not trigger immediate enforcement. It does start a contractual clock, and both the cost and the available exits can change as the delay grows.
This timeline describes a typical consumer loan in Romania. Your agreement may use different notice dates, penalties and procedures, so read the repayment schedule and the clause that covers missed payments.
The first days matter.
From the first late day to recovery
| Stage | What may happen | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| After the due date | Contractual default interest may start. Reminder messages or calls can follow. | Ask for the exact balance and the date on which payment stops further accrual. |
| Beyond 30 days | The delay may be sent to the credit database after notice given at least 15 days in advance. | Check the notice and propose a realistic payment date in writing. |
| Following months | Formal demands, acceleration or assignment of the claim may follow, subject to the contract and the law. | Request restructuring and keep every reply. |
| Enforcement | It does not begin automatically on a universal day. An enforceable title and the applicable procedural steps are required. | Do not ignore formal documents. Seek legal help promptly if the amount or procedure is disputed. |
Every agreement keeps its own details.

What the 30-day threshold actually means
Reporting should not be understood as a switch pressed on day 30. The published rule refers to a delay of more than 30 calendar days.
It also requires notice to be sent at least 15 days before the information is transmitted.
Prompt payment still helps.
Paying the arrears stops the delay from growing, but it does not automatically erase the history. Negative data may remain for four years from payment of the last overdue instalment or, if the arrears remain unpaid, from the last reported update.
Kreditano's guide to the credit report explains what you can inspect, while the article on correcting credit information separates a genuine error from accurate negative data.
A solution should be explored before enforcement
Current rules require lenders to maintain procedures for attempting reasonable restructuring, where appropriate, before starting enforcement.
Options may include extending the term, postponing part of the instalments, partial payments, changing the interest rate or refinancing.
That is not a promise that every request will be accepted. It is a reason to explain the income change, attach supporting documents and ask for an answer on a durable medium.
Request everything in writing.
Bogdan Baicu, Kreditano senior editor: “In the files reviewed during 2026, the practical difference was not who told the most persuasive story by phone. It was who raised the problem early, put the figures in writing and requested a plan they could actually keep.”
What to do while the widest options remain open
1. Call before the next due date. State what you can pay and when. Ask for a registration number for the request, not only verbal reassurance from an operator.
2. Request three figures. The overdue balance, accrued cost up to the payment date and the new total if you accept restructuring. A lower monthly payment can hide a longer term and a higher total cost.
3. Check insurance attached to the loan. Some policies cover involuntary job loss or temporary incapacity. The notification window may be short.
4. Compare refinancing while your record still allows it. Start with the Kreditano refinancing calculator, then inspect active refinancing options. Compare total cost, not only the first monthly payment.
5. Keep a complete trail. Save notices, statements, payment receipts and proposals. If information is wrong or a practice is unclear, use the guide to your rights under a credit agreement.
What does not fix the problem
Some shortcuts cost more.
A new loan taken only to cover the old payment moves the pressure rather than removing it.
It can make sense only when the new agreement lowers the total cost or makes payments sustainable within a rebuilt budget.
Silence is expensive too. It does not stop notices, default charges or contractual steps, and it consumes the period in which an agreement is easier to build.
If a co-borrower or guarantor signed
The person who signed with you can be pursued under the obligations they accepted. Tell them as soon as the payment is missed, because early action can protect both household budgets.
How much income may be attached
Legal limits matter.
For ordinary debts, attachment of periodic income is generally limited to one third of monthly net income. With several attachments, the combined limit is one half. Income below the national net minimum receives additional protection under the Code of Civil Procedure.
Kreditano cannot see your contract or individual file. It can help you compare available offers and read the costs before a rushed decision becomes another difficult monthly payment.
